Hi

I have an ASE Cluster Edition 15.7 SP121 and in rare circumstances all the processes in the database been became in status sleeping. There is not  errors in the Sybase ErrorLog. The Event ID for these process is 512 (waiting for buffer validation in cmcc_bufsearch) and 509 (waiting for buffer read in cmcc buf search). Additionally I need documentation about the possible events in Cluster Edition.

The solution until the moment has been Kill on dataserver because there is not posible kill the process or restart the server.

Anybody Can help me?.

Good Morning Everyone,

I just wanted to let you all know that averSQL (pronouced ey-ver-S-Q-L) is now available at averSQL.com. averSQL is a query tool designed to work specifically for SQL Anywhere and ASE.

I hope you find it useful. I'm always interested in hearing of ways to make it better. If you have an idea that would help you do your job better, please let me know. support@werysoft.com

Cross database permissions problems

$

We have an odd situation with cross database permissions.

Our production database server has multiple databases with many cross database operations (insert, delete, select)

which works without any problems with permissions.

We dump/load the production database into a replica server each weekend which we use for testing purposes.

Occasionally (and I mean very occasionally) on the non-production server we hit issues with cross-database permissions.

eg DELETE permissions denied on object XXXX, database YYYY, owner dbo line: 179....

All the tables in our databases are either owned by "sa" or dbo (loginame on sysobjects are either allnull or sa).

The sa ones were created by the DBA as the databases were migrated from another server and the null ones

are ones we have created since this migration.

I've read this online but can't tie this back to a ASE document

"Stored procedures using cross database tables also need select/update/insert

permission on underlying tables if the tables are not created by

     sa/sa_role/dbo"

If this statement is correct, then as I understand it, we don't need to add permission to the underlying object since

all our objects are owned by sa or dbo. And considering how much cross-database joins we do - then this statement

does appear correct.

Are we understanding this correctly ?

Has anyone else had a similar issue ?

My suspicion is that its related to the dump/load causing an issue with checking loginames with dbo accounts across databases ?

Is it better to have loginames on all objects as null or better to have them as sa (or other) for cross database permissions to work ?

Thanks

Sybase missing libraries in OCS_15 folder

$

Hi Team,

On taking build in C++ workspace, the application refers to few sybase libraries ,

LIBCS.LIB, LIBCT.LIB, LIBSRV.LIB and LIBSYBDB.LIB

We have changed the configurations settings for libraries to '%SYBASE%\OCS-15_0\LIB' folder.

But LIBCS.LIB, LIBCT.LIB, LIBSRV.LIB are missing in Sybase 15.5 lib folder and we are unable to complete the build successfully.

Thanks,

Where to download Sybase Open Client from ?

I was assigned with the task of installing Sybase Open Client on a new server. They told me I could find the installation files on

SAP website and I did found it there, the weird thing is that the SAP website link (http://www.sap.com/corporate-en/about/our-

company/policies/sybase/third-party-legal.html) for Sybase Open Client only redirects to a blank pdf file.. Do you know where I can find the

installation files to download?

KBA not released

In the recently released KBAs there's an KBA (2243767) which is actually not released.

It's security related, that's probably the reason why it hasn't been released.

However, a server might be seriously affected by this issue and I'd like to know more about it, like:

- affected ASE versions

- in which version it will be fixed

- possible workarounds

Do I need to open a SAP Sybase ticket for that?

Or is it possible to provide some basic info here?

Getting data via ODBC gets truncated when exceeding the TextSize length

$

Hi,

I'm writing an ODBC program that read data via ODBC from Sybase ASE.

I'm using the following API's to extract the data:

Method 1: SQLGetData

Method 2: SQLBindCol, SQLExecute, and SQLFetch to fetch the data.

When i'm trying to get 'big' data, that exceed the TextSize length (default is 32K), its get truncated without issuing even a warning message.

I tried to change the TexSize in the connection string, but the connection failed with size bigger that 160K.

This limitation is crucial for me, cause it mean that i cannot extract LOB's and other 'big' data.

Is there a way to workaround it?

Where the limitation come from, the ODBC client?

Thanks,

Dror

Hi,

We are needing to update ASE 15.7, on Solaris 10 platform under “Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3u2”, but according documentation of version 15.7, the Sybase-HA component is certificate only version 3.1 of Solaris Cluster.

What is the SAP recommendation?

Process mode vs Threaded mode

$

Is there any known issue with threaded mode performance. We have been using process mode in Red hat Linux environment which seems odd given Sybase recommendation is to use threaded mode for performance.

Also is there any known performance issue of using file system devices instead of raw partitions when used with threaded mode.

Migrating Sybase ASE to SQL

$

Hi ASE Community,

I have a customer that is attempting to migrate ASE to SQL via the following method:

"To migrate Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) databases to SQL Server, we must connect to the Adaptive Server that contains the databases that we want to migrate. In our scenario, SSIS packages will create connections which point to Sybase database using Sybase ASE that is called Sybase ASE Data Provider in SQL Server."

What kinds of tools and requirements will this customer need?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

getting data quickly from a master backup

$

Recently I was asked to recover a corrupted instance from backups

I ran into some issues with corrupted devices and decided a rebuild would be much faster then a recovery

However, I needed to reload the master database anyway to get latest data from system tables like logins, roles, passwords, etc.

It would have been much faster if I would have been able to reload the master database backup into a regular user database to just get this data and then discard this database again. But this is not possible and raises error 3109.

I know, a copy of system tables from master using bcp provides this info. But it was too late for that.

Building a new instance just to reload the master db to get this info is also possible.

Of course the master database contains lots of system tables unique to master, which don't make sense in any other db

I'm wondering if there's a traceflag to avoid error 3109, just to save some time.

dbcc tune (des_bind)

We're getting a lot of contention on

     resource->rdesmgr_spin

The advise here http://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/SYBASE/Spinlocks+and+CPU+usage+in+SAP+ASE#

is to use dbcc tune(des_bind,)

but this limits our ability to do reorgs, etc as we can't unbind objects easily. DBCC Tune(DES_BIND) determining the correct objects

Is there another way to reduce contention without using dbcc tune ?

Would setting up more named caches improve things albeit not fix it altogether ?

Would a cache for the sys*objects be useful ?

Thanks

Mike
